Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are a unique subset of pituitary tumors. While NFPA treatment may seem straightforward, there are many alternatives in their evaluation and management. To examine the evidentiary support of these alternatives, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Tumors has published its Guidelines on the Management of Patients with NFPA. The authors combine their extensive experience in neuroradiology, pituitary surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, endocrinology, radiation treatment, and guidelines development. The evidence supporting different methods of pre-operative imaging, endocrine, and neuro-ophthalmologic testing are each examined in the guidelines. Different technical issues in pituitary adenoma resection are evaluated to determine treatment options. Finally, radiation therapy encompasses a range of treatment paradigms and the evidence supporting these alternatives is also assessed. For any surgeon or physician treating patients with pituitary adenomas, these guidelines provide an excellent resource to provide the highest quality of care for these unique patients
