Carl W. Rand

Carl Wheeler Rand was born in Monson, Massachusetts on April 8, 1886, the son of Jenny Peck Rand and Nehemiah Wheeler Rand, a physician. Dr. Rand attended Monson Academy in Massachusetts and later Williams College from which he graduated in 1908 with a M.S. degree in English and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

In 1912, Dr. Rand graduated from The Johns Hopkins Medical School and did his internship under Dr. William Halstead. In 1913 he was the senior resident of Dr. John B. Murphy at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. He began his residency with Dr. Harvey Cushing on January 4, 1914 at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Rand began his surgery practice in Los Angeles with Dr. Frederick Coller in 1916. This was interrupted in 1917 when he enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corps and went to France serving as a neurosurgeon near the front lines for 2 years. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Dr. Rand became chief of the staff of the Hospital of the Good Samaritan and the Los Angeles Children's Hospital. He started the neurological surgery services at the Los Angeles County General Hospital (University of Southern California Medical Center) as well as Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital and the Los Angeles Children's Hospital.

Dr. Rand was a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons and served as its president in 1935. He was also a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Harvey Cushing Society, the Central Neuropsychiatric Association, the Los Angeles Academy of Medicine, the American Medical Association, the California Medical Society, and a diplomat of the American Board of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Rand was married to Katherine Humphrey and had three daughters and a son, Robert Rand, M.D. Dr. Carl Rand wrote more than 100 articles, three medical books, and a multitude of poems and songs.
