    2024 Neurosurgery Emergencies Course

    All neurosurgical practices deal with neurosurgical emergencies. High stakes decisions need to be made rapidly as neurological function of the patient depends on it. This course is designed for neurosurgeons, neurosurgery advanced practice providers (APPs), neurologists and emergency medicine physicians.  It provides information about state-of-the-art diagnosis, workup and first-line treatments for neurosurgical emergencies. We will focus on indication for emergency surgeries, end-of- life communication techniques, shared decision making, updated treatment guidelines and new emerging clinical scales that are changing the field. Audience participation will be enhanced through case discussion.  Learning will be enhanced with active teaching techniques based on adult cognitive learning theory. All teaching will be problem focused and cased based learning.

    The following will be covered in detail: advances in stroke management, the emerging role TXA in intra-cerebral hemorrhage, the ever- changing landscape of anticoagulation, TBI and spine trauma, and endovascular treatment of chronic SDH, and on update on the new stroke guidelines. This is a good crash course for medical students and residents on how to be effective in the emergency operating room and a good primer for junior residents on seeing neurosurgical patients in the ER.

    Learning Objectives:

    • To describe and discriminate state-of-the-art treatment for neurosurgical emergencies.
    • Apply up to date stroke management for patients with hemorrhage or ischemic stroke.
    • To execute correct anticoagulation reversal in the setting of an operative neurosurgical emergency.
    • Assemble an effective interprofessional team to treat neurosurgical emergencies.
    • Review and apply new evidence-based literature to neurosurgical emergencies.

    The Congress of Neurological Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

    The CNS designates this live activity for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
