    My Dear Boy,

    We got your letter and package of paper yesterday. There is lots of interesting reading in them and had good laugh at the comic paper "Katzenjammer Kids." One cliping said W.E. Dandy was going to stay at Hopkins. We allowed some for that but you will soon find out now.

    I hope you had a good vacation. I think you need it. And need Mama to give you some good meals or else you want to cease being so perticular about your eating. Let your stomach be satisfied rather than starved because of an extremely sensitive mind. Your reason should tell you by this time that you had better not be so perticular. But just eat and get fat. Give the stomic something to work on. Mama and I have ceased to be so perticular and are better for it. At least we think so. Of course you are Johns Hopkins man and should know what is right. But fancy Mama working hard to get you fat and accomplished her purpose and in her absence of 12 months you have lost all she put on you and one remarkable thing about the destruction of her labor she don't scold you but feels sorry for you. But if I had to destroy anything she has done, there is no sorry for me. So I will cease to bother about it. Let her and you do as you please.…

    I had another letter from Mr. Riley in Portland also large bundle of papers. He has been working in Winepeg Canada but it does not compair with Portland. He says Portland is called the "City of Roses." He thinks their is no place like it. Makes me wish to go and see it. And if convenient live in it.

    The cliping of paper you sent about Dr. Cushing's departure did not mention Dr. Goetsch. Didn't he go with him. What did the man do that took the dog house after you. I think it well you did not go with him, Cushing, as you are both to high tempered to be together. Like hard steel you are to brittle. You need mixture with other materials such as Dr. Finney.

    Now I think by the time you answer this you will have found out something so will ask you about the following. If you get general surgery will you get any salary. Also will you have to stay in the hospital like you did last year. If so is it any use for us to come seeing you won't get home much. And further is it likely that you will go some place else next year to start brain surgery. If so would it be worth the trouble moveing for 12 months or rather about 9 months. We are perfectly satisfied any place so don't trouble over these questions.…

    Say be careful with your ancle your health or constitution. If it is strong don't abuse it. It is the best you will ever get and prevention beats cure at least I think so. Even if you are a doctor
