    My Dear Son,

We were delighted to get your letter last night and to hear of your great success over Cushing's paper. What a miserable creature he must have looked, a man with such a wonderful record as he considered himself to have made to look insignificant by a boy doctor. I think he ought to go west where the requirements were not so high. You are only starting with him. You will maybe soon make it so hot for him that he might want to get away. I would do my best to beat him. Don't consider him at all. He surely put lots of obstacles in your way when you nearly lost out in getting a place at Hopkins, and now he is sorry to see you there I believe. Don't be afraid to show him up every where you have a chance (in this I mean by your superior work). His anger would do more for you than his smiles at Philadelphia. Tell us more about these things and what the other doctors thought. It takes a lot of that to satisfy us.

I am surely proud to hear of my boy being such an eloquent speaker, wish I could have heard him. I heard him once on his valedictory, that beautiful picture I shall never forget.

If you had not been a man with nerve and ambition and pluck, Cushing might have spoiled your whole career. It was wicked for him to do so to a poor young student working and fighting only for the truth. It will come home to him yet. He couldn't look at you, guilt was marked on his face.…

Pa saw in the paper where Ford's Autoworks Company are giving away $10,000,000 annually to his workers, profit sharing, and none to work for less than $5 per day. Do you ever have any desire to go to Detroit Hospital or don't you think it good enough for you.

Did you ever get that student to teach. That meant $95 more for you. Hope you get it now as stocks are so low.…

    Your loving Mother

P.S. Just received a clipping from my home in Ireland about a Johns Hopkins doctor. Will send it to you. They are all watching you, even in old Ireland, from which place you are the proud possessor of a temper that will help to rule the world.…
