    89 Anson Street

    Barrow in Furness, England

    October 18, 1912

    My Dear Son,

Your letter of the 7th received. Was rather surprised you had not got any decision. But I think you have adopted the best method. It will give you more time to think out and advance. These times reminds us of the time you was so intent on seeing Dr. Cushing.

I thought about you yesterday. Mama and I had been walking arround the docks and came back via the Furness R.R. machine shops, round house etc, and it reminded me of the time I used to go and see the…superintendent of motive power to try and get the job of wiping engines. I went for months 2 or 3 times per week and sometimes he would not look at me, others just speak and I felt you could hardly stand such cruel treatment to get work and I hope you did not have to.

Well we still think you will get what is good for you and are satisfied it is Hopkins. For aurselves we don't scarcly know what to do. We are now thinking about spending the winter in London or Southport and come to you in the spring. Of course we can determine better after we here deffinite from you.…

As a whole I think we like the States as well as England.

I see wheir Ford has put the brakes on the English Motor combine who was formed to compete with him. He as made a reduction on his former prices and agents say he is good for further reductions. The English can't compete with the Americans.

Say it was to bad about Teddy getting shot. He will claim he would have got elected only for getting shot and keeping him from putting his side before the country. Well I used to think America politics was rottenest in the world and English the best but I have changed my views somewhat. I now think they are both as bad as they can be. Their is some pretty rotten things in politics here and while there are lots of good English men their are lots of worthless ones. I think they are much worse than they used to be.

I think I can be satisfied to come back to America, settle down in some detached cottage with a small amount of land for garden and raise enough vegetables to eat fresh and about 20 chickens so I don't have to eat stale eggs and bad chickens and isn't it nice to think that I can have this and almost any place I want it.…

Will close for the present with best wishes for the highest success of my boy and the election of Debs.

    Your affectionate Father
