  • Walter E. Dandy Letter 12/01/1912

    7 Great Percy Street

    Kings Cross Road

    London, England

    c. December 1912

    My Dear Son,

…Glad to hear everything with you is well and everything runs so smoothly. Last year things didn't run so smooth. You had a lot to put up with on account of Cushing's bad temper. Do you ever hear from him. I think it was well you did not go with him.

I think I have told you my brother in Ireland has a son in Boston. He went there about 2 years ago. He is only about 19 years old, but they say a very large boy for his age. I think he works in a gum factory. I think it is pretty hard and dirty work. We had a couple of letters from him. He wanted Pa to help him to get on the railroad.…

I believe the women are as bad for powder and paint as in America. Some look as if they had stuck their face in a flour barrel. I think the fashions are about the same as America. The Suffragists are causing lots of trouble here. Lloyd George's new house was badly damaged yesterday. Some one tried to blow it up. They blame the Suffragists for it. I think they are a disgraceful lot. Pa thinks they are all right and ought to get the vote.

We were in a meeting the other night. There were several good speakers, especially a member of Parliament. There were a few Suffragists in the meeting and they kept interupting the speaker all the time. It was very annoying. He said don't take any notice of them. They don't bother me. They ought to have been put out. A good many wanted to put them out. I think they ought to be put in gaol and left there. If they won't eat let them die like any poor criminal would have to do. They have money and can do pretty near anything. If it was the poor they would have to suffer.

I had a letter from Mrs. B. I will send it to you. There is very little news in it. I would have thought she could have had lots of news from a place we knew so well. Polly and O. is doing well if it is true. Polly could make the mother believe a whole lot of things if it would please her.…

Well I will close now hoping you are successful in getting a prize. Tell all about your work and if your meals are better and if you have got any money out of Dr. Bloodgood's propositions.

    Your loving Mother
