  • Walter E. Dandy Letter 11/28/1913

    20 Holford Square

    November 28, 1913

    My Dear Son,

…We thought we had better send her your letter, so as she could see the nice things (as she calls them) you said about her photo and also such a brilliant letter from such a brilliant man. Pa read it and reread and reread. I often said to him reading that letter again. Oh, he would say, it is couched in such fine language. I wish I could use language like that. He can put in a few words what he means and I would have to write so much to explain. (I said maybe he couldn't run an engine as well as you.)

I will send you Lena's letter so as you can see how nice and simple she is on the reply to your letter. I think if you have any desire or think you would like her wouldn't it be better for you and her to correspond, and I think you ought to send her your picture. I think I told you her age 23 but she don't look more than 18 and the mother said she was a Christian and had been for sometime. That to my mind is one of the most important things in a partner.

Pa thinks she would just suite you better than any of your old girls. He says it would be fine if he could get an Irish girl for you. When the mother and her was here I think Pa was courting pretty strong for you. The mother said if you were as good as your father and mother you would be all right. And what do you think they did on leaving. They both kissed Pa. The mother said, I am just going to kiss Mr. Dandy and Lena also kissed him. So you see he had been telling them things that pleased them. She has a fine father. A good Christian man.

Well I think this is all on this matter. If you want to know anything just ask and I will try and give you the desired information.

We went to the park yesterday and saw a very enthusiastic football game. I did not understand the game but it was very interesting to see them falling over one another and squabbling to get a kick at the ball. It was between soldiers and policemen. Then after we came home and had tea. We went to the Y.M.C.A. to hear an illustrated lecture on cannibal life by Mrs. D. Crawford. It must be a terrible life for white people, but she seemed to like it and love the people. The pictures were very interesting.…

We just had a letter from Mrs. Todd saying her son had died in America. Left one little child. He worked in the coal mines. His wife just went back to U.S.A. after being here for a year on a visit.…

    Your loving Mother
