    My Dear Son,

    …Pleased to see things are shapeing themselves more to your likeing. It begins to look as though the spiritualist made a good guess at least when she said you would stay in Hopkins for more honors. Well whether she is right or wrong, or whether her theories are well founded I am not so much interested as I am in the welfare of my boy. I desire it so much that I almost feel that I could recommend you to get it any way although I prefer the right way and feel satisfied you will get there by the right route.

    I was much interested last Sunday afternoon at a Brotherhood meeting addressed by Dr. J. L. Gorden from Winipeg Canada. He was certainly fine. He has charge of the Peoples Church there. His subject was "Character versus Cash" He thought everyone should have some one object in life patterned after no one because each had different individuality and if you have an idea that a certain thing is right contend for it. If you know that the thing is right fight for it. And success is bound to follow the man with theese convictions. It reminded me so much of you and how you have had to contend to bring your ideas to the front. So if he is a good judge, and he seems very likly, you are bound to succeed. In fact I think I now see the clouds parting by force of weightier arguments and undeniable proofs that the theories you have advanced are based on facts and all the powers of egotism and selfish personality will have to step aside being unable to endure the just exposure of natures laws by the son of a poor but proud engineer.…

    Well you seem to have the same determined nerve in investments that you have in your proffesion where you will risk it all on Missouri Pacific stocks if they come to your terms. Again I wish you success and even think you will come out all right. At the same time I had never the nerve to do this. And even if I had the nerve I question the judgment in it as I always had to see that someone else's stomach besides mine received attention. But you are different. Your father will only be to pleased to have the privalage of looking after yours, in case you need it and here let me say that if you invest and need any money, I can on the first of October furnish you with all I think you will need or about $175. I have sent to Porter for all that is due first of September which will last us a long time. And in case you need it bad I can return some of it. But it costs considerable to transfer money between the two countrys. But in about the first of October, Porter can send you check without cost. So you can advise in the matter.

    Well I see President Wilson is haveing his troubles especially with Mexico. It looks to me as though he was trying to do about the right thing with them. So far I admire his methods since he has been in office. And I hope he will show the world that America is not only leader of the world financially but scientifically, morally, and every other way. I am not very conversant with the…Mexican trouble as my subscription to the Appeal ran out and so far I have failed to renew it. But I think I shall have to reorder to get to see the other side of things. Truths usually covered over for personal or political reasons. The same dark things are commited here and fancy I used to think that the English were perfect almost, especially in law. But I now see the difference. This makes me think that it is dangerous to be too positive on something you have not examined from all angles. And especially in politics where there is usually an axe to grind.…

    There is one thing I have not been able to do as yet. And it begins to look as though I shall have to cease trying. And that is to be Boss of this room for although I am older, larger, and even first in the suggested partnership, you consider all theese generally supposed advantages, I have still got to be subject to the little Boss. I think when we all get together again, you and I had better form an alliance and see if the two of us can beat her at bossing. I am doubtful aren't you? This being the case, all I say about coming back is worthless. So I will continue to submit.…
