    20 Holford Square

    Percy Circus

    London, England

    June, 1913

    My Dear Son,

Your welcome letter in hand, glad you did not have a sore throat nor anticipated a far distant trip to practice spiritualism. Wrong as usual. Mr. Seddon and family is a firm believer in it. I am sorry to say no power short of Divine interference could change that man. It is sad to see those people risking their eternal salvation on such whimsical ideas of some man or woman.

Well you must not think we are penned up in London for we are in a lovely place. I think I told you in my last letter all about the locality we had moved to, nice long back yard with grass and trees in it and a nice little park in front used only by the people in the Square. It is like being in the country. I like it better here than any place we have stayed since we came to England.

The gas company is putting a gas cook stove in the room and I can cook for ourselves. That will be much nicer. We put 3 shillings or 75 cents down when we get the stove. That pays for one year. After one year we pay 9 pence every 3 months or about 18 cents. It is like getting it for nothing. The company is more anxious to get people to burn gas than about stoves. This is a nice enameled stove (in the inside). Pa is anxious for it to get here so as he can have some biscuits.

That American young lady we were speaking to said she believed she would never want to see cabbage and brussel sprouts or mutton or lamb any more after she got back. I had said the same thing.…

Of course we would like to see and to be with you, as Pa said this tea time. Just to think, it is nearly two years since we saw our boy. We have been having strawberries every day for the last few days. Now we wished our boy could have some of the nice strawberries we were enjoying so much. Give us your idea about us staying another year.

Pa has gone to a Socialist meeting tonight. He likes to hear and see everything.…

You didn't say if you went to Philadelphia to test your cure on the baby. Well we are not sweltering here by a long way. It is cool enough for a fire and at night it is quite cool. Wish we were nearer so as you could come and spend your holidays with us. Where are you going this summer?…

    Your loving Mother
