    My Dear Boy,

…Glad you had good feed on Thanksgiving. I think you will need it after puting up with hospital grub so long. It is remarkable how you hold to 162 on such stuff. I think if you had Mama or your own little girl Lena you would get to 175 but I am rather afraid you would not do so good work on hydrocephalus etc.

Your articals received and read and reread but not understood yet much admired because we believe it is good. No wonder Dr. Halsted complemented you on the drawings. As far as I can see they are perfect. If you continue to turn out work like you are now doing I do not think the young German comming to Hopkins will stand in your way. He is not big enough to produce a shadow that would obscure you or your work. I do not think that all Germany or the U.S.A. could stand in your way for long. Dr. Cushing tryed it and it only made you shine brighter and any other seeming trouble will go like snow before a hot sun. All theese Rubicons you have crossed and you can do it again. Your ability commands your recognition. So don't fear any man or nation. You must and will excell.

You will be like the little Boss here. You say you have not heard lately who is Boss at #20 Holford Square. I have heard it often and I can't help it. She made a good start at it in her home like you did in school. So now there is no keeping either of you back. In fact I have quit trying because she is to much for me and more especialy because I find it is better for me to be bossed because she bosses for my good.

But results might be different with your competitors so I would advise you to continue to lead in your own calling. But when you get Lena, well I think you will be like me. You will let her be boss at home for your own advantage. Say you say you have not wrote her yet, will do so when we tell you more about her. I don't see what more we can tell you unless we begin research work and this you can do better than we. But if you have any questions to ask we will only be to glad to try and answer. Will say that she is very fair. She has not got the English or Irish red cheeks and white face or skin but rather pink colour all over her face. She is very intelegent, cheerful, and if you give her a dollar in her change, the eagle will squeal hard before she would release it and I think she would be perticular neat and clean. You think she resembles Miss Kilpatrick. Not quite so nice although almost perfect but their ways are as like as two beans.

If you write her ask her anything you want to know about her. She will tell you. And tell her she has the same privilages with you. Account of being an unusual way of getting aquainted you must persue unusual methods.…

    Your affectionate Father
