    My Dear Son,

…Yesterday we went to Brompton Oratory, a Roman Catholic Church. The doors are open and any one can go in. They have several alters. The people kneel and pray and bow before these images. Then they put holy water on their forehead before leaving. You would be surprised that people were so foolish as to believe in such rediculous forms and ceremonies.

Pa was reading this morning where Lipton was going to race with America again. He said I hope America wins. I said when you were in U.S.A. you used to want the Englishman to win. Well he said if I had never came to England I would have thought more of them.

He has never seen a woman yet that he would care to live with or recommend to you. If you saw some of the girls here you would be disgusted with the feminine class. They wear such tight dresses, slit at the bottom, thin stockings, their legs almost bare. Every step exposes their leg and I never saw anything like it for paint and powder. I am really disgusted with the sex here. I don't think they are as bad in America. You had better get one before the old timers are all gone.

I saw a piece in the paper last night. It was wanting to know what had became of the old fashioned, home loving girl. I will send it to you. I don't want to see you an old bachelor, but I don't believe I would want to see you with the kind of females I see here. Do you ever write to Miss Stanley or she to you? Poor girl, she thought a lot of you. Do you never hear from Mrs. Campbell the rich lady? Are you still keeping her room for her?…

    Your loving Mother
