    89 Anson Street

    Barrow in Furness, England

    c. early September 1912

    My Dear Son,

…You did not tell us whether Cushing had stopped your pay or not. I can hardly believe Cushing, what he says about Halsted. It is more like expressing his own sentiments and feelings. He is not interested enough in you to advise you for your good. He might be afraid of you getting his place. However it is a good thing to be a listener and no harm to hear what they have to say and then do what you consider the very best thing for yourself.

I trust our heavenly Father will guide you in this important step. He is the one who can make crooked paths straight, Who is over all things and above all things. Don't forget to look above. He knows everything about you. He loves to help his children. He says in His Word to cast all our care upon Him for He careth for us. May we be like Jacob not let him go till we get what we want if it is His will to give it.…

We are both getting very lazy, nothing to do and don't care to do anything. I have pretty near forgot how to keep house. Tom Todds wife came on Monday to bid us goodbye. She sailed on Tuesday and takes a Pullman from New York to her home in Illinois.

    Your loving Mother
