    20 Holford Square

    Percy Circus

    London, England

    November 13, 1913

    My Dear Son,

…How quickly the time passes. Nearly Xmas again bye the bye. Be sure and don't send anymore bags or razors or silk socks or anything. We don't need a thing and everything is cheaper here than in the States. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness but would rather you would use the money on yourself. I was very sorry to hear you had only one suit and that a pretty cheap one. I want you to dress nice and look nice no matter about the expense and I think you will feel better and be more respected. Pa is going to send you 3 coupons school bonds $60. When you get them go and get you a couple of suits. I would hate to see the brightest man in Hopkins with the poorest clothes.

Well I don't know what to think about the salarys at Hopkins. I believe if I were you I would accept for a few years, at least till something good showed up. Would you get $2,500 for a start? That would be all right for a couple of years. I think they had a nerve to offer Dr. Finney and Kelly that amount. They won't be able to keep good men if they don't pay a good salary.…

I look after Pa and he looks after me and we want you to look after yourself. I wish I had a lot more news to tell you. You see we don't know many people. Even in the house we hardly see them to speak too. A big city like this is a very lonesome place. Everybody is strangers. Pa can make friends with anybody. Im rather backward.…

Have not had a reply from your girl, Lena Cranston. What do you want to know about her? We don't know much about her. Only what we saw of her when she was here. We met her in her own home a couple of times when we were in Barrow but did not think much about her then. But I think she would make you a good wife. What do you think of her picture?

    Your loving Mother

Just received Lena C. letter. So as you will get better acquainted I must not say anything about her feet or you might give her up. Well she has nice little feet. When did you hear from Miss Stanley? Poor girl. She thought lots of you. I think you will like this one better.…
