    89 Anson Street

    Barrow in Furness, England

    July 16, 1912

Well My Dear Cripled Up Boy,

I was glad to get your letter but sorry to learn of your misfortune and would advise you to be more careful in the future. It is well for you that Mama can't use a stick 4,000 miles long as I think she would try it this A.M. on you for being so reckless in your play.… She won't by you another watch. Nor do anything for you. So carless. Might have been ruined for life, etc., etc., disfigured your face, etc. She just could not eat her breakfast. Then my sister blamed me for letting her see the letter before she had her breakfast. So you see I got it too. But not as bad as you. She always was afraid you would get hurt with that old ball. When she had got you looking and feeling good in Sedalia, you had to go and play with those doctors and weare yourself out. Took 2 or 3 weeks to get you right again. I think the only way you can get in the good graces of the little Boss is to keep pretty close to the millionaire lady.…

Well I went downtown last night and I saw in the window in Duke Street a great many pictures of the boat (and persons) that we rode to Fleetwood on when we went to Isle of Man. And looking amongst them saw the little Boss and me amongst them. So I got some and showed them to Mama. And she was going to send you one to let you see how I looked when affected with sea sickness. But this A.M. after hearing of your accident you can't have the picture either. Of course we will be going out for a walk and talk and things will be different when she comes back. Then I think she will want to kiss her boy and fix up his wounds, give him something nice to eat and nobody on earth she cares for but him etc., etc.…

    Your affectionate Father
