    20 Holford Square

    Percy Circus

    London, England

    December 3, 1913

    Well My Dear Boy,

I think you will need some good meals to help you to endure this heavy strain that must be pressing on your already burdened mind by my added burden of matrimony to the usual burden of research work.

I think I told you in my last letter that I thought she would keep if you were not prepaired for action. At least that is the condition of most girls especialy intelegent ones like I think Miss Cranston to be when they have reason to believe they are going to get a fine young doctor by waiting a little for him. So I would suggest to not make extra haste or over anxiety over the matter but look well to your future work. At the same time I think it would be well to tell her just how you are situated and ask her if she is willing to wait if need be after you decide that you like each other. After she sees your picture she will determine much by it. Besides we want to see it.

I have been thinking that Dr. Halsted will be saying something to you about a new position for you after he returns from Chicago. I don't think you will fail to tell us if he does.

I am sorry to notice your stock is still down to 24 7/8 yesterday. And I notice that President Wilson is going to take another shot at the employers liability according to this A.M.'s paper which I feel will still pull it down account of increasing their liability etc. But I notice you say you bought it in about the same words as a man takes a woman for a wife for better or for worse. I hope eventualy it will be for the better. At the same time I am afraid it will be some time before you make much out of it.

Now I don't want everything to press on you at once so I am enclosing you for Christmas present 3 Sedalia School bond coupons, Nos. 10?11 and 13 for $20 each, Dec 20th. Also two coupons Cascade Co bonds 41 and 42, January first 1914. Your banker will cash you theese or you can forward to N.W. Harris for collection. I feel I must say that this money is to be used on my boy for things to eat and wear etc but not on stocks. You might spend some on photo. The reason I restrict you on how to spend I know you are game and feel like digging deeper in MoPac. But you are of more value than are the Pac stock so see to yourself first and other benefits will follow as you prepare the way.

    Your affectionate Father

P.S.More anxious about Ph.D., fine positions etc. than stock. Good work done and recognized shines brighter in my sight than gilt edged stocks or even diamonds.
