    My Dear Son

…I had a letter from Matthew [Todd] last week. He is feeling well with the exception of noises in his ear.… He has had 2 or 3 operations on his nose. If you go to Chicago, I would like for you to call on him. I will give you his address and you can write and let him know if you go. I am sure he would be glad to see you. He is an old bachelor and you can sympathise with him in that respect.

I hope you will soon get settled and know what to do. I am glad that you have the privilege to stay if you want too. You do what you think is the best for yourself regardless of anybody. It is every one for himself. The people are very selfish in this country. We have found that out as we go from place to place. They are particularly fond of tips. They would hardly answer a question except they thought they would get a tip. They won't get very fat on what tips they get out of us.

Well my dear boy I think we will stay here till next year as we are very comfortable, and you will be alright. Get plenty to eat that is all you need. I wish you could find a nice little girl that would make you a good wife (in a few years). You are only 27. That is pretty young, but don't come over here to get one. That young man you refer to who is coming over for a bride. I don't know where he has found her if she is any good. I would rather have an American. What I know of them they are far ahead of the English man or woman. You are young enough in 10 years to get married. Then you will be well established every way and can take it easy. This is what I think but of course you are of age and can please yourself. Do you ever hear from Miss Stanley?

    Your loving Mother
