    My Dear Son,

    …Margaret E. and her three children have gone home. Very glad to see them go. That is the woman that used to have a sick husband and died. We used to send her money. She is a very rough kind of woman. I don't wonder at young people being so good for nothing here. They are brought up in such a way as to be no good. She has a little boy 12 years old. He is all the time reading these old yellow half penny novels. Then they go to see pictures. Little girl 6 years and this boy often go, coming home late at night. Then they are continually begging money for candies. Nothing but chocolate will do the children now. One night this little boy came downstairs from bed. I was alone. He said I believe I will go out and get a paper. They have good stories in them. I looked at it and told him he ought to read something useful not a lot of lying stories. They said as soon as he got down to the depot he bought one so as he could read on the train. Their minds are poisioned from mere children. But what can you expect. The parents are lovers of the same. Well they did not get much of my money to throw away. I have seen to much of their folly. They will have to spend their own and when they have none, they need never come to me with their poor talk of woe.…
