    My Dear Boy,

    Just got your letter and glad to hear you are anticipating a holiday. It will do you good to go and have good time romping arround playing, swimming, etc.

    It certainly looks as though Dr. Cushing intends to stay in Boston buying such a nice house and automobile.

    I think I will get a Ford when I get back so we can help build hospital with it. That looks to me as though it should be good place for you. In fact any of them looks good. And I feel satisfied you will get the best there is. If you feel you would like to stay in Hopkins I don't see anything wrong in asking Dr. Cushing to speak for you. In fact I think it would be to his interest to help you and keep on good terms with you rather than in opposition and finaly in compettion with you. And while it looks to me as though there is lots of room for several more brain surgeons it is no use to overstock the market with antagonists in the same calling.

    I rather think it should be his duty to try and place you in good place without you haveing to ask him. But I guess he is like you and me, rather independent. Well anyhow you do the best for yourself regardless of him.

    You say you will have to get something that you can make your living at from the start. I admire your determination but your father and mother are still able and willing to help you in case you need us. And in making your decision don't be influenced to much in that direction by taking position that pays on the start simply because you need the money now. Therefore if you can see place that you think you would like take it too regardless of the money providing you think it will come later.

    Your father and mother are always with you and for your interest. But we can't advise you on theese matters. But personaly if it was not for the reputation of Hopkins I don't see why Detroit or St Louis would not be better place account of being more central. It would certainly give you an opertunity to show what was in you if you could get the cases to work on. However you know best. Better go and see the places.

    I had letter from a Barrow man in Portland, Oregon. He is brother in law of Mathew Todd.… He is coming to see his mother this Christmas then going back.…
