    c. March, 1913

    My Dear Son,

…We don't seem to appreciate Spring here like we did in U.S.A. We used to have great pleasure in seeing the young grass and flowers peep up. Here everything is green all winter, and the weather is about the same as it has been all winter, dark cool rainy weather.

I believe we will both come back well satisfied to think America is the best place. I don't think Pa will ever brag on the English man or woman anymore. I believe he thinks more of the old Katy engineers than any of the English he has met here. He still likes to see the picture of the fine U.S.A. engineers. They don't look much here, nothing for a man to feel proud in running and they only get about 3 shillings a week for running, a boys wage in America.

We had thought of going back to America this year (if you got settled) in August or September, but if you stay another year and not sure of staying any longer, I think we had better stay here till you get something definite. We don't want to settle in Baltimore if you were not there.

On the other hand we don't want you to do anything on our account, but do the very best for yourself. That will give us the best satisfaction. All our thoughts and desire is for your welfare and happiness.… Let us know what you think about theese things, if you think we had better stay another year here. It costs about $20 per month here to live. It is not a dear place.…

You ought to be sure and see the professor before he gets away and have the suspense of what you are going to do over so as you can enjoy the summer better than the last. Well I hope you will be led to see clearly what to do for the best. Trust in Him who doeth all things well.

    Your loving Mother
