    September 11, 1912

    My Dear Son,

…It looks as though there is still lots of rascality going on in U.S.A. especialy in politics. The Bull Moose seems as though he must have gone through the Socialist lumber yard and stolen lots of their planks but has drove nails in them and through them has placed iron chains arround them so they are useless for material to build with and like himself destined for the scrap heap. He is certainly an underhanded trickster. He would be a disgrace to America to place him in power again. Do you think your friend Wilson is real or just a grandstand player. For Wilson I rather think it. I think the only real candidate is my old friend Debs. As firm as the Rockies and as wide as the world but too truthfull to prosper rapidly.

Mama and I were thinking this morning that since Dr. Cushing's departure that Hopkins would abandon or had intended to abandon the class of work that Dr. C. had been carrying on, perhaps thinking no one else could do it in U.S.A.…

Say we heard some good ones about you the other day from Seddons. A friend of theirs who we got acquainted with is a medium and she gave an account of you. You was going to get more honors or degrees. All the doctors was admiring you in amaisment. You was going to get married soon account knowing you could not always have Father and Mother but not the rich girl.… Was fine man with splendid spirit influences to guide you. You was going to the very top of your profession. Had great love or sympathy for the suffering etc etc. Mama says you are not going to get married.…

    Your affectionate Father
