    My Dear Son,

…We have been in London one year. It only looks like a few weeks and over two years since we left U.S.A. We never thought we would have been away so long.

The weather here in winter is mostly foggy and dull, not much sunshine and not much snow or real cold wintery weather. The seasons are pretty much alike except it is a little warmer in summer. I have felt the cold more here than I ever did in the States. It is so damp and penetrating but it is not so cold here as in Barrow. We have worn flannels all the time since we came to England.…

We spent yesterday afternoon looking around the stores for little presents to send to England and Ireland. The little ones look for something and the older ones too. They all want to get something for nothing.

Let me know how you liked Pa's description of Lena. Pretty good wasn't it. She is a fine little girl I think. Has features all good and in harmony except her nose that is a little long, but it does not hurt her appearance very much. She is good at telling old Irish stories. She told us one (she said it was true) about an Irish dance. One of the men in proposing another for a dance said I suppose that man sitting over there in the corner is picking his nose for a dance. You ought to have heard Pa laugh. She could say it in Irish, that made it more laughable. Her mother said that's not very nice to tell. She said I know it but it is true. She kept us laughing with her jokes.

I have written to her and sent her one of the books on the nerve supply. Pa read it twice to me. We enjoyed it although not understood. The drawings looked perfect, fine. I'll bet you put in lots of good hard days and nights at it. I hope your expectations will be fulfilled in your other articles. I don't think you have any need to fear any other man coming in ahead of you if you thought so. I should think it would be a good idea to get some of your doctor friends to speak against any one going ahead of you. You know best. I hope they don't put any one ahead of you.

Well Pa sent you a Xmas present last week and I thought I would send you a little remembrance this week. It is a pin and tie. Hope you will like them and also hope you will have a very happy Xmas and bright New Year.

Don't send us anything. We don't need a thing. All we want is your picture and one for your girl.…

    Your loving Mother
