    My Dear Son,

…Glad to hear you were well but sorry you had lost so much weight. 152 pounds. How can I ever pull that up. Are the meals any better than they were. Well I hope you have a lovely time on your holidays. It does not take much of a holiday to tire you. Maybe some day you will be able to enjoy a good long holiday like the rest of the doctors.

Don't forget to tell us who you will be working with if you stayed at Hopkins, Dr. Finney, or who. I hope a different man from Cushing. Brain Surgeons will soon be a common speciality like any other thing. You have had as good a training with Cushing as that man that has given up his $400 a month practice haven't you. I would think it would be nicer for you to stay with a hospital than start for yourself. But you can't tell yet what you will do. You will do well anywhere. I am not afraid of that.

I got a new suit. It is pretty hard to get a nice one here. I went to every store in Barrow and then got one. I don't particularly care for the one I got but Pa liked it and he says it looks fine. It is a dark brown and I got a pair of shoes also, very heavy. When I went in the store I asked for a pair of shoes. She brought down some low shoes. I said I wanted high ones. She said its boots you want. So I got a pair of boots £8.10s. and Pa also got a pair. They call suits costumes here and waists blouses. I have a great time getting the right name for things.…

Pa has written a long letter to my brrother and the spelling was good. I believe when he writes to you he gets particular and over does it.…

Hoping soon to hear of you getting what you want. Don't forget to answer Pa's questions. How did that poor man with the six children get along.

    Your loving Mother
