    89 Anson Street

    Barrow in Furness, England

    October 4, 1912

    My Dear Son,

…Very pleased to hear you had such a good time down the bay. You should have stayed a couple of weeks and you would have gained your old weight. You did fine to gain 7 pounds in 5 days. In swimming I would advise you to keep near the shore. In getting a long away out sometimes it is pretty hard to get back in. There has been a great many drowned at these seaport towns this year bathing and swimming. But I think you will be to cautious to take any risk in this line.

Well I hope you have got the place you desired in Hopkins. If you did get it do you think you would have a permanent place or only temporary. Of course when we come to America we would like to settle down. It would be no good for us to come to Baltimore if you only stayed there for one more year. As soon as you have decided let us know your ideas and advice in this matter. If it was possible we should like to be near you.…

Well everything is about the same here. Beautiful weather the last few weeks. They say there has been frost here the last few nights but we don't get up early enough to see it. Get downstairs about 9 am for breakfast. Quite a change isn't it. I used to have quite a lot of work done by that time in America. Work does not bother me now. I can get along very well without it.

I think we will go arround the stores this afternoon looking for bargains. I like to look for bargains as well as I ever did. They have a big market here sells all kinds of goods and wares. You can't trust the English man any more than you could an American. Different class of people to what they were years ago.…

Try and get Cushing's job if you stay at Hopkins. Did Mrs. Campbell never answer your letter. I have an idea that nurse she has with her from Hopkins might have told her something probably about your temper. Well it doesn't matter anyway. You don't need the girl nor her money.…

    Your loving Mother
