    89 Anson Street

    Barrow in Furness, England

    c. Fall, 1912

    My Dear Son,

Delighted to hear you had got what you desired in Hopkins. We had looked anxiously for a letter this week expecting to hear you had got the place. I just wished I had been near enough to have given you a big kiss. You have been very successful in getting what you wanted and I hope for your greater success than you ever anticipated. I have an idea you might stay there for years. It would be fine to keep connected with the biggest university in the States. You have not Cushing to thank for getting you anything.

It is nice to be independent but I would advise you to use a little more of English temper as the Irish is a little too strong especially with the powers that are over you. I think I would give in a little for your own sake. We want to hear all about your new work and who you will be working under. Is it Dr. Finney or Barker or who and let us know if you get a salary and if there is any chance to get Cushing's place. Did Goetsch go with Cushing. Who is taking Cushing's place.

Now don't let that old Irish temper do anything to hurt you. Will it over to Pa. He hasn't got much. They rouse his ire a little sometimes if they won't have his socialistic ideas. Mrs. Todd is a bitter conservative. Doesn't like socialism. I don't suppose she knows much about either. The people here in town is not bothering much about socialism. They would rather go and see a good play or have some beer.…

I hardly think we will go to America this winter. It is getting rather late. It is nicer sailing in spring. Let us know what you think about these things. If we were in Baltimore you would not get home often.

Tell us all about your new work and how you like it. It is a big relief on your mind to have it settled. I'll bet you will show them all the way. Mind and don't work to hard. How are the meals. Are they any better than last year.…

    Your loving Mother

Best wishes for greater success nothing short of the head of the University.
