    January 10, 1914

    Dear Mother and Father,

I suppose you are happy after so much newspaper notoriety about your boy. It was copied in all the newspapers throughout the country.

Everything has been very quiet since. I have been piling in a lot of work. The German is here. He is quite a nice fellow apparently. He can't speak much English and will have a pretty hard time I should think. I don't know and don't care a whole lot about his status here. I am beginning to be able to live in compartments of 24 hours and try to let what is ahead and behind take care of itself. In other words, do my work and let things shape themselves to a certain extent with the anticipation that things usually turn out for the best.

Heuer is going to Germany April 1st for 9 months and then come back to his present job. The man ahead of me says he is going to quit then, so I may have a pretty good thing though that is far ahead yet. I may possibly get to do brain surgery when Heuer goes to Germany. That would be very good. I believe things are very bright ahead though I must confess I don't relish a perpetual job here on a full time salary with a maximum of $10,000. Still we will see how things work out.

Got your tooth pick and holder and they were very nice.

There was a dance here last week but I didn't go to it. They were dancing in the hall in front of my room, so beat it over to the laboratory and wrote on my article until 3 A.M. which was a lot better than dancing and cost $5 head.

MoPac went up this week quite a bit. It will soon be back to 30½ again. Well I ought to be able to send you one of my pictures in a few days. I believe you will like them. I sent a clipping from each of the Philadelphia papers and the Sedalia Democrat. I thought you would like to have some Sedalia notoriety and gaff.

Well you will soon be ready to start back to America. You had as well be here as there. It won't be long now until I am self sustaining. I will send you a couple more clippings. Do you want to pay $5.00 and get 100 different clippings about the thing from the various papers of the country.

We are having cold weather but nice and dry; the climate is really fine this winter, no snow or slush. Well I am glad you don't have to go out on the Flyer and miss your sleep any more.

Some of these days when I am permanently located I think I will write Yeater in Sedalia a nice letter and tell him how much I owe him for his excellent advice in starting me right. I could and probably would never have been able to have reached Hopkins and my present ambitions had it not been for his advice. That was when primary money and time looked so big to me and my foresight was quite shallow.

    Your loving son, Walter
