    7 Great Percy Street

    Kings Cross Road

    London, England

    February 28, 1913

    My Dear Son,

…We enjoyed your papers. They gave a fuller account of the Scott tragedy than our London papers. We went to the Scott Memorial at St. Paul's. We were there an hour and a half before the time. Thought we would have a fine seat and see the king but instead of getting in we had to stand outside in a crowd as thick as sardines in a box. Thousands outside and the church full and had been for hours. Came back rather dissappointed. We had not seen the man that is adored by many.

It does not take long to fill churches or places of amusement here. Only places I find are not filled is the Socialists meetings. We went to one on Wednesday evening. I don't think there were 50 people. And the speaker was pretty good. The poor people are well satisfied if they can get something to eat and drink and wear. They would rather the King and Queen had the good things of this earth. A Socialist said the other night if the King or Queen was to spit on their door step the people would try to get it up and frame it. But I think they would not go quite so far as that. Socialists go a little to the extreme don't you think so? Pa thinks they are all right.…

…Well I hope you are successful in winning the prize. Who is your partner in it? Pity you did not have the whole thing to yourself but that looks rather selfish for me to say.…

    Your loving Mother
