    89 Anson Street

    Barrow in Furness, England

    September 10, 1912

    Well My Dear Anxious Boy,

…Well no doubt these are trying times for you but you seem to be able to endure them or rather evade them by always having some alternative in view. And the alternative is usualy something that others would be proud of even the prospect of attaining. But my boy is only after the best. And that is what he will get and I think as you get nearer your path will become clearer to you. I am satisfied you will have the chance of Hopkins. On the other hand Detroit looks good to me both from your point of view and in addition for us to live. But your advantage must be the motive that determines the case if such can be deffinately conceived. If in case of doubt I would prefer Detroit as far as I am concerned. First there is meetings there that I like. Secondly good location and rapidly growing city. On the other hand you might not get the chance to test your ability at Detroit like you would at Hopkins because of reputation. However I think if I was you I would take trip and see during your holidays and charge it to me if your finance is low.

As stated in your letter if you are nearing the Wolf period, mention it and it shall be driven away as we are constantly accumulating.

Well I can't reason out Dr. Cushing's reasons for telling you about Dr. Halsted's adverce attitude toward his aspiring men as it seems lame where he states he succeded in the absence of Dr. Halsted's inattention to business. Did he think you could not do likewise. Or do you think he thought you had large aspirations and by stateing this you would be detered from asking for his position for fear you would never advance any further or he would turn you down.

Well all advances of new ideas suffer and you can't expect to entirely avoid it in some form so be game and cross the Rubicon and shout liberty on the other side. Like the old saying he who laughs last laughs best. Their is no use fearing for you are destined for the top and neither Cushing nor Halsted can keep you from it. They may delay you but like grass trodden down it will rise again. Keep a stiff upper lip.

But don't forget to write to the Little Boss punctual especialy after telling her you was going down the bay for boating and swimming etc. during your holladays as she knows that drowned people can't write letters. Given her suspence and anxious thoughts, kissing pictures etc. that I sometimes saw her do I had my hands full devising fresh stories to satisfy her with and so had my sister.… She is OK now. She just hugged her boys letter.…

    Your affectionate Father
