John A. Jane

John Anthony Jane, MD, PhD, FRCS(C), FACS, was born and raised in the Chicago area. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from the University of Chicago, 1951 and attended the University of Chicago School of Medicine and graduated with an MD degree in 1956.
Dr. Jane did his internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and began his neurosurgical residency at the University of Chicago with Dr. Sean Mullan. During his residency he had a number of important research and clinical fellowships. He was a fellow in neurophysiology at the Montreal Neurological Institute in 1958 and a senior fellow and demonstrator in neuropathology in 19599 and 1960 at McGill University in Montreal. In 1961 Dr. Jane went to London to serve as a research assistant to Mr. Wylie McKissock at St. George's Hospital and the National Hospital at Queen Square. There he conducted his seminal work on the natural history of intracranial aneurysms. He subsequently returned to Duke University to study with Dr. Irving Diamond, and in 1967 was awarded the PhD degree from the University of Chicago, Division of Biological Sciences, Section of Biopsychology. Dr. Jane completed his neurosurgical residency in 1963-1964 at the University of Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute with Drs. Oscar Sugar and Eric Oldberg. In 1965 Dr. Jane became associated with Dr. Frank Nulsen at Case Western Reserve University. After four years he assumed his present position at the age of 37 as the Alumni Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He became the David D. Weaver Professor in 1987.
Dr. Jane is especially proud of having participated in the programs at the Western Reserve and subsequently at the University f Virginia and in the training of 13 Professors of Neurosurgery, 11 of whom became Chairmen, three Associate Professors, and five Assistant Professors. In 1993 Dr. Jane was elected as Editor of the Journal of Neurosurgery.
Dr. Jane has served as a Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and as Vice-President of The Society of Neurological Surgeons. In 1985 he received the Grass Award and was the Olivercrona Lecturer. He also received the Alumni Award for distinguished service from the University of Chicago.
Dr. Jane has a unique perspective on neurosurgery. His initial work in comparative neuroanatomy and psychobiology of marsupials, reptiles and teleost fish make him a veritable encyclopedia of neuroanatomy and physiology. His clinical interests and research have been in the treatment of sever head injury and disorders of the spine. He has an active spine service operating on nearly 400 cases last year. He was one of the originators of modern techniques fro the treatment of craniofacial disorders.
The residents who train with him respect his immense capacity for work, his surgical skills and judgment, his unselfish commitment to them and his sense of humor. Dr. Jane's bibliography lists over 250 publications.
