Donald F. Dohn

Donald F. Dohn was born on August 16, 1925 in Buffalo, New York. He attended the Kenmore public schools in Tonawanda, New York. He received his premedical education at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 1952 and received a Baccelli Research Award and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He was a member of the Nu Sigma Nu fraternity while in medical school. He served a rotating internship at the Buffalo General Hospital and then went to the Cleveland Clinic where he was a resident in general surgery from 1953 to 1954 and a resident in neurological surgery from 1954 to 1958. He was a clinical clerk in neurology and neuropathology (Fulbright Scholar) at the Institute of Neurology, National Hospital, Queen's Square, London from October 1956 to June 1957. He toured neurosurgical centers in Great Britain and Europe between June and August 1957 and toured neurosurgical centers in England, Sweden, France, and Switzerland in June and July 1970. He also visited the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont and its microsurgical laboratory. He joined the neurosurgical staff at the Cleveland Clinic in 1958 and was chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery from 1968 until 1981. He then moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi and joined the active staff of the Singing River Hospital. Dr. Dohn moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in January 1988 where he joined the staff of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Florida.

Dr. Dohn was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1960 and became an associate examiner in 1969 and served as a member of the Board from 1972 to 1977. Dr. Dohn joined the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) in 1959 and was a member of the Executive Committee from 1965 to 1977 and was chairman of the Annual Meeting Committee in 1968. He was president of the CNS in 1971 when the meeting was held in Miami.

Dr. Dohn is a member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) from 1968 to 1981 and was treasurer from 1974 to 1977. He served as president of the AANS in 1979. Dr. Dohn is a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Southern Neurosurgical Society, and the Florida Neurosurgical Society. He has published 62 papers on a wide variety of neurosurgical topics. Dr. Dohn has three children, Debra born on May 6, 1953; Douglas born on May 10, 1955; and David born on August 20, 1958. He and his wife, Carolyn, are quite fond of sailing, a sport that he has enjoyed in both Mississippi and Florida.
