Abstract Awards

The CNS Resident Award is presented to the outstanding abstract submitted by a resident for presentation at the CNS Annual Meeting. A 1,500-word manuscript must accompany the 300-word abstract, which should be sent to meetings@cns.org. Your Department Chairman must certify that the resident author had a significant role in the project. Please ask your Chairman to email a letter to the CNS at meetings@cns.org with the subject line "CNS Resident Award Letter from Chairman."

The Best Data Science Award is presented to the abstract which must utilize advanced statistical methodology including big data analytics to evaluate structured or unstructured data sets. The selected winner of this award will receive an Nvidia Graphical Processing Unit for use in future research.

Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Young Neurosurgeon Clinical Award

The Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Young Neurosurgeon Clinical Award is given to the best young faculty paper addressing a clinical topic in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Young Neurosurgeon Basic Science Award

The Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Young Neurosurgeon Basic Science Award is given to the best young neurosurgeon paper addressing a topic of basic science in Stereotactic and Functional neurosurgery. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

Within five years after completion of residency or fellowship and must be first author/presenting author

Galbraith Award (Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery)

The Galbraith Award (Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery) award is given to the best resident paper addressing a topic of cerebrovascular surgery. The selected winner will receive a $500 award.

Julius Goodman Resident Award (Socioeconomic)

The Julius Goodman Resident Award (Socioeconomic) award is given to a neurosurgical resident based on originality, merit, innovation, and scientific process. The resident must have made a significant contribution to the abstract. The abstract is chosen by two to four members of the Communications and Education Committee (CEC) of the CSNS appointed by the Chair of the CEC. This annual award is presented at the CNS Annual Meeting, and the selected winner will receive a $500 award.

If it is decided that there is no abstract that deserves the award that year, the ad hoc committee may choose not to present the award that year.

Samuel Hassenbusch Young Neurosurgeon Award (Socioeconomic)

The Samuel Hassenbusch Young Neurosurgeon Award (Socioeconomic) award is given to a young neurosurgeon based on originality, merit, innovation, and scientific process. The young neurosurgeon must have made a significant contribution to the abstract. The abstract is chosen by two to four members of the Communications and Education Committee (CEC) of the CSNS appointed by the Chair of the CEC. This annual award is presented at the CNS Annual Meeting, and the selected winner will receive a $500 award. If it is decided that there is no abstract that deserves the award that year, the ad hoc committee may choose not to present the award that year.

The Duke Samson Award (Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery) is given to the best clinical paper by a resident or fellow addressing a topic of cerebrovascular surgery.

Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery Best Basic Science Abstract Award

The Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery Best Basic Science Abstract Award is given to the best basic science abstract on the topic of Pediatric Neurosurgery, submitted by a training physician. The awardee is chosen based on originality, merit, innovation and scientific process. Abstracts are reviewed by the Pediatric Section. The selected winner will receive a $500 award and presents the abstract at the CNS Annual Meeting.

Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery Best Clinical Research Abstract Award

The Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery Best Clinical Research Abstract Award is awarded to the best clinical abstract on the topic of Pediatric Neurosurgery, submitted by a training physician. The awardee is chosen based on originality, merit, innovation and scientific process. Abstracts are reviewed by the Pediatric Section. The selected winner will receive a $500 award and presents the abstract at the CNS Annual Meeting.

Medical student, resident, fellow, or young faculty (within 5 years from completion of training)

American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) Young Investigator Award

Sponsored by the American Brain Tumor Association, the Young Investigator Award is given at the AANS and the CNS meetings to a junior faculty member involved in neuro-oncology research who has demonstrated outstanding potential for future basic science research. The applicant must have been out of training for less than 6 years. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

The Columbia Softball Skull Base Award is given to a high-ranking abstract related to skull base surgery by a resident or medical student. The award is presented at the CNS and AANS annual meetings and the senior author of the paper must be a member of the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

BrainLab Neurosurgery Award

The BrainLab Neurosurgery Award is given at the Annual Meetings of the AANS and CNS. This award is given to a neurosurgeon practicing in a nonacademic or international setting with a high scoring abstract related to central nervous system tumors. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

Integra Foundation Award

Sponsored by the Integra Foundation, this award is given at each of the AANS and CNS Annual Meetings for a high-scoring abstract submitted investigating benign brain, spinal or peripheral nerve tumors. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

Rosenblum - Mahaley Clinical Research Award

The Rosenblum - Mahaley Clinical Research Award is given for the best clinical paper at both the AANS and CNS meetings to a neurosurgery attending, resident or fellow. Special recognition is given to innovative approaches and those that lead to improved patient outcomes and quality of life. About twenty-five years ago just after founding the Section, Dr. Mark Rosenblum established the Mahaley Clinical Award in honor of his friend and colleague, Steve Mahaley, who was terminally ill at the time of the award's inception. While this award was not independently funded, it has been a hallmark of the Section. In 2019, Dr. Mark Rosenblum and his wife Pam pledged funds to continue this award in perpetuity. The Award was re-named the Rosenblum-Mahaley Clinical Research Award. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

AANS/CNS Joint Section Tumor Neuro-Oncology Trainee Award

The Joint Section Tumor Neuro-Oncology Trainee Award is given to a high- ranking brain tumor clinical or basic science abstract submitted by a resident or medical student. The award is presented at the CNS and AANS Annual Meetings, and the senior author of the paper should be a member of the Joint Section on Tumors. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award

James Rutka Pediatric Award

The James Rutka Pediatric Award is given to a high scoring pediatric tumor abstract submitted by a resident or faculty member who is a member of the Section on Tumors will be given at each AANS/CNS with the recipient receiving an award in the amount of $1,000.

Stryker Tumor Award

The Stryker Tumor Award is given to a high scoring abstract on CNS tumors by a medical student, resident, or neurosurgeon. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.

Mizuho Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Surgery Award

The Mizuho Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Surgery Award is given to a high scoring abstract focused on minimally invasive techniques for brain tumor surgery by a resident or neurosurgeon. The selected winner will receive a $1,000 award.
