RESIDENT PROGRAM REGISTRATION
Data science techniques are becoming commonplace throughout neurosurgery in research studies, clinical trials, and operating room technology. This course is designed for neurosurgeons with an academic or leadership focus who will use data science in their research or hospital administrative duties.
This course will provide an overview of various types of data science techniques, with a focus on image analysis with artificial intelligence (AI). The course is suitable for those who do not know how to code or model build themselves and is not designed to teach coding. The aim is to teach neurosurgeons how data science is applied in neurosurgery, to successfully collaborate with data science researchers, and to understand how AI is incorporated in image analysis.
At the end of the course, we will have breakout sessions for a virtual hands-on experience to practice developing data science questions, evaluating models, and learning about data science resources. Participants will break up into small groups into various interactive rooms on the topics of data science resource discussion, research project proposals and practice data science modeling.
Option 1: Data science resource discussion - This interactive room will focus on resources available to physicians to perform data science research and apply for grant funding. We will have industry collaborators provide overviews of available resources and explain challenges for starting data science projects.
Option 2: Research project proposals - Propose a research topic/ask questions to our data science experts. One of the most challenging parts of starting a project is getting a foot in the door. In this room, our data science experts will field questions from participants about their project, give feedback, and help develop your projects in a group setting.
Option 3: Practice data science modeling - Learning to code and perform data science experiments is challenging as a neurosurgeon. Orange is a graphical user interface that puts python coding behind easy-to-understand widgets and demystify data science. In this interactive session, we will demonstrate how to use orange to develop a neurosurgery-specific data science model. Participants will learn how to visualize data, organize an experiment, and evaluate their model.
