Introduction: Early management of extensive maxillfacial injuries in patients with severe head injury is a challenging task and requires multi speciality and multidisciplinary approach involving Neurosurgeons,Maxillofacial surgeons and Intensivists to acheive good functional and Neurological outcome
Methods: 250 cases of severe head injury patients with glasgow coma scales between 8 and 12 with extensive maxillfacial ,mandible and orbital injuries were treated in our hospital in the last eight years and all patients were operated by our team of Neurosurgeons and maxillfacial surgeons with in forty eight hours of Trauma
Results: 95 percent of patients showed good functional and neurological recovery with only two patients dying due to meningitis.
Conclusions: Early management of extensive maxillo facial injuries in patients with serious head injuries remains a challenge to Neurosurgeons the world over.Through our case study we conclude that a multidisciplinary approach,with high quality of intensive care patients can be treated for both head injury and extensive maxillofacial injuries in the early stage of trauma with good functional and neurological outcome
Patient Care: This study encourages us to suggest that patients with severe head injuries and even poor GCS score can be treated for extensive maxillofacial injuries in the early stage of trauma management with good neurological and functional outcome
