The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) proudly announces its collaboration with leading neurological professional organizations to develop the One Neurosurgery Summit Taskforce on Professionalism and Harassment. Participating organizations include the CNS, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery (AAcNS), American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS), and Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS).
The goal of the Taskforce was to develop a policy establishing that all participants at sponsored and organized events, including satellite events, should have an opportunity equal with others to participate without being hindered by harassment and/or insensitive practices.
The article “Developing a Professionalism and Harassment Policy for Organized Neurosurgery”, written by Dr. Ellen L. Air, Katie O. Orrico, JD, Dr. Deborah L. Benzil, Dr. Alan M. Scarrow, Dr. James R. Bean, Dr. Catherine A. Mazzola, Dr. Linda M. Liau, Dr. James T. Rutka, and Dr. Karin M. Muraszko, published online ahead of print today in both Neurosurgery and the Journal of Neurosurgery and scheduled to appear in the May 2021 issue of both journals, provides a deeper look at research used to develop the policy, the hopes of using the policy, and expected outcomes.
The authors state, “...we wish to bring greater attention to everyone’s responsibility for ensuring a safe and respectful space for education, scientific debate, and networking during organized events.” The participating organizations have adopted, or will adopt, a Code of Conduct or other equivalent policy, and are hopeful this will bring about change in future events.
