Schaumburg, Illinois, May 17, 2021— Congress of Neurological Surgeons clinical practice guidelines are highly impactful on clinical practice and patient outcomes and relevant to neurosurgical training programs. Several studies show the overall efficacy of guidelines and adherence to guidelines. However, specific to neurosurgery, there is a need for more in-depth analysis of not only guideline adherence but impact of guidelines on patient outcomes. This grant program will provide valuable training and experience to the award recipient, and results will also be used to help advocate for treatments proven effective.
This year’s Scholarship will run through the academic year July 2021–June 2022, and the final work will be submitted for presentation at the 2022 CNS Annual Meeting. A manuscript based on this work will be submitted to Neurosurgery.
This year’s recipient is Dr. Thomas Larrew, who is in his fifth year of residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. The topic of Dr. Larrew’s project is determining how widespread the use and knowledge of CNS’s pediatric hydrocephalus guidelines are and ascertaining whether the implementation of these guidelines has affected pediatric hydrocephalus outcomes. Dr. Larrew states, “I am extremely grateful to the CNS Guidelines Committee and everyone at CNS who made this possible. It is an incredible honor. I'd like to thank everyone at MUSC and my family for the constant support. I very much look forward to starting the project.”
