J. Michael McWhorter

J. Michael McWhorter was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on November 8, 1941. He was awarded a B.S. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg in 1963. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1968. He interned at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital from 1968 to 1969 and started his residency there. His training was interrupted by 2 years of active duty with the United States Navy between 1970 and 1972. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander and served on the USS Guadalcanal.

Dr. McWhorter returned to the North Carolina Baptist Hospital where he was a resident in neurological surgery between 1972 and 1977. During this time he served a fellowship in neuropathology and also a fellowship in neurology. He was a fellow in microneurosurgery at the Christ Hospital Institute of Medical Research in Cincinnati from January to June of 1976 and then was a fellow in microneurosurgery in Zurich, Switzerland in 1976. Dr. McWhorter was invited to join the faculty of neurosurgery at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1977. He started out as an instructor and is now an associate professor.

Dr. McWhorter became very active in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He was the annual meeting chairman for the meeting in New Orleans in 1986 and was president at the 1989 meeting in Atlanta with Dr. Thoralf M. Sundt, Jr. as the honored guest. Dr. McWhorter has been very interested in international neurological surgery. He was a member of a visiting surgical team in St. Croix, Virgin Islands in 1979 and in Haiti in 1980. He was a visiting faculty member at the Tokai University Hospital in Japan in March 1990.

Dr. McWhorter has been very busy in the clinical practice of neurological surgery, teaching, and research. However, he has not forgotten that medicine is only part of the larger world and he is an active member of the Rotary Club of Winston-Salem. His teacher, and former chief and honored guest in 1980, Dr. Eben Alexander, Jr., was a former president of the same Rotary Club. Dr. McWhorter has served on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club from 1983 to the present. He has served on the Venture-in-Mission Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and on the Board of Deacons of the Knollwood Baptist Church from 1984 to 1992. He served on the Board of Directors of the Forsyth-Stokes Mental Health Authority in 1984. Dr. McWhorter married Barbara Dix and they have three children, two daughters and a son.
